When Guardian Angels Need Help – Part II

Continuation

Jacob walked to his mother’s bedroom door holding the papers. “Mom. Please, talk to me.” Gently he knocked, only a few raps were made. “Mom..”

A soft click was heard right before the door began to open reluctantly. Her hair fell carelessly in her face, and her gaze was on the floor. She didn’t say a word as she walked to the living room. Patiently Jacob followed, sitting beside her he waited her to talk, knowing she would need a little coaxing.

“Mom, you can talk to me.”

Lifting her face slowly she took in the sight that was her son. He was almost a man now, that had became obvious. The width of his shoulders revealed the weight he suffered from. The slender figure exemplified the financial situation, however, he never complained. Shaking her head, if only for a moment, she wished she was as strong as him. Wrapping her arms around him, she remained in the embrace so long as it took her to pull herself together.

There was so much that he didn’t know, and so much that she needed to tell him. But after losing his father, how was she supposed to tell him he’d be losing her too? How was she supposed to tell him that she couldn’t pay her own medical bills? That in an attempt to give him money she tried to keep a premium with a life insurance company paid? How was she supposed to accept the fact that she was dying long enough to tell him, without breaking down herself?

After pulling away from her son, she put her hand on his shoulder. Trying to remain strong for his sake, she began..
“I understand… I-I do. But..” Came the struggled reply from her son. She knew he was only remaining strong for her.

“..And I didn’t want to leave you with nothing like your father left us. He loved you, and I love you. The premium is expensive.. I’m ill, of course it is, but, I just need a way to pay it. It’ll be worth it.. For your sake.”

“I’m going to quit school. I want to stay home and take care of you. I can get a job, and we can keep food in the fridge. You will be fine. You will. I’ll make sure of it. Mom.. Mom. I will. We can make it through. You and me. We’ll be fine.”

Shaking her head slowly, her voice was stern. “No. You are a senior in High School, you are going to finish and graduate. You are in the top twenty of the class, you are not throwing that away.”

“Mom. It’s worth it to take care of you. I can get a job without it. It’ll be fine.”

“I said no.”

“How am I supposed to continue on like life hasn’t changed? How am I supposed to go to school and concentrate and work hard the way I used to knowing you’re at home dying?! Tell me. How. You couldn’t. You would quit your job to take care of me.”

“That’s different. I said no. I’ll be fine, I’ll get a second job. But you may have to get a part time one.. To help take care of the expenses. I’m sorry.”
“I will. Just.” Jacob didn’t know what else to say. His mother wouldn’t let him quit, and he didn’t want her so disappointed in him if he did it anyway. Hugging her tightly he swallowed the agony. She had to be alright. She just had to.

She had called off work that day. She had been doing it far too often lately. She needed the money, but her body just could not handle the stress of two jobs. The month had passed, and she didn’t want a reminder she had signed those papers in the first place. A bill, or any paper from there. She didn’t want to remember she wasn’t going to get better. And she didn’t want a reminder that she had prepared for it. She felt like if she embraced death, rather than resisted, then things wouldn’t be so hard for her. But she just could not do it, thinking about her son, thinking about leaving him behind; that made her blood run as cold as ice. It was hard not to think about it though; and it was even more difficult to suppress the emotions that came with the thoughts. She couldn’t accept that she would die before even seeing her son graduate. Who would be at his wedding? Who would be there for him?

When Guardian Angels Need Help

She swallowed the fire rising in her throat, she ran her fingers through her hair. She didn’t want to fill out those papers. How could she? She didn’t want to admit what was happening in her life. She had to conceal it. Her son couldn’t find out. No. It was her burden, hers alone, for now, and the time was not right to tell him. Picking up the death contract she tried to keep her hand from shaking, she looked it over, trying to concentrate. Trying to read the words, again. To be unmistakably sure this was what was needed. But, she couldn’t do it. Her mind was too distracted. She had already read it a thousand times anyway. She threw the papers down on the desk and shook her head, she couldn’t muster the will power to do it. She stood from her chair, only to pace the room a few times and sit down again. She stared at the desk, then the words written on those papers. Those horrid words. Under normal circumstances they wouldn’t have bothered her; it would have been easy, signing her life and soul away. But it wasn’t easy now. She could feel the fire rising again, she could feel it in her veins. She could feel it in her eyes, as the mist blurred her vision. It was the burning sensation that came when one’s blood ran cold as ice. The burning kind of cold.

She clenched her teeth and shut her eyes. She had to do it. She knew she had to. There was no other way. There never is another way. It was for the best. She tapped her fingers on the desk before she took a deep breath and felt the smooth face of the pen. Picking it up, she tried not to think of what it meant, but how rather it would help. It wasn’t the cause of the problem. No. It was the solution. But it only reinforced how real the problem had become. She would go through with it anyway.

Months later.

“Hey mom.. I’ve a question. Do you have time?” Came the unsure voice of Jacob. The look on his face was pure concern, so his mother could do nothing to send him away.
“What is it that has you so concerned? My boy. I always have time. Ask away.” She tried to keep the unease from her voice. She already knew what it was about.
“Why have you been acting so strange lately? You seem.. Off.. Like really off. And I’m concerned. Is it about dad? You know I’m here for you if y-”
Giving a interrupting chuckle she smiled warmly, as normally as could be mustered, “What could you possibly mean?”

“You know…” Sighing he continued,” Mom, you’re acting strange. You are always, staring off. You cry at night. I hear it, I know you think I’m asleep, but I woke up one night and heard it. It’s been continuous. Mom. What’s going on?”
“Nothing son. Grown up stuff, you know.” With that curt reply she stood, kissed her son on the forehead, “Thanks for the concern, but I’m fine.” And she walked away to go see if there was any food in the fridge for dinner.
That night, she resisted the urge to cry. Instead, she laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. The fire in her blood returned. Pain began in her chest as she fought crying, because she had to control her breathing. Her head began to ache. She shook her head as she thought of what her son said. It was all too much. It wasn’t time to tell him yet. She remembered the feeling when she first filled out those papers. What it had meant for her, what it had meant for Jacob. But she couldn’t keep up. Everything was coming down, crashing around her, shattering as she struggled to make it through.

After checking the mail, and clenching those report papers in her hand, she forced herself to walk inside, completely emotionless. She needed to be fine, until in the privacy of her own home. Upon reaching the kitchen table, she threw the papers on the table and ran to her room. Slamming the door, she locked it, before leaning against it. Her plan, in ruins.

“Mom! I’m home!” Called Jacob as he closed the door behind him. He looked around, his mother was nowhere to be seen. Glancing into the kitchen he saw papers that had strewn across the table. So carelessly some had found their way to the floor, others remained on the table. Taking a second glance at one, he read the words “Late” then “Grace period.” Puzzled he picked up the paper, to read, “Life Insurance”.

“Mom?” He asked. “Mom, what is going on?”

How to Save on Life Insurance

There are two different perspectives that you can look at, if you want to save on life insurance policies. One is of course saving when you are buying a new life insurance policy and another is saving on current or existing life insurance policy. When you are shopping for a new policy, you want to take time to look around and evaluate all of your options, and to see which policy will provide you with the best value for your dollar.

If you are looking at term insurance, it is very simple. You need to figure out which company will provide you with the amount of insurance you want at the lowest premium. You can do some research and check out the ratings of the different companies. There are also few companies that do survey on these companies. Take some time to do some research on these companies to figure out where you want to place your life insurance because it is not the type of policy that you want to cancel or make a lot of changes to.

There may be many different ways to save money on your life insurance coverage, if you have an existing life insurance policy; one idea is to take a look at replacing your life insurance coverage. However, when you are replacing a policy, you can be entailed to get a new policy which means you have to go through rendering again. So you may want to think about that.

A simple way to save money on an existing life insurance policy; if you have a term life insurance or a whole life insurance is to switch the mode of premium payment, if you are paying other than annually. For example if you are paying monthly, making use of the privilege of paying by a monthly bank draft, you may have been paying an extra eight to ten percent per year in premiums. That is an easy way to save money on a life insurance policy.

If you have a whole life insurance policy or universal life policy, you may be able to reduce the premiums or stop paying premiums altogether. You can do it based on how much cash value you have accumulated in the policy.

It is worth asking questions and learning more about how your policy is structured and what your options maybe, by consulting with your insurance company or insurance adviser.

Legally pursuing life insurance payouts

If you are the beneficiary to a life insurance policy and you require advice on benefits as well as how you can receive compensation it may be wise to seek legal help from a representative who has extensive experience in starting and receiving insurance policy claims. Seek an experienced legal representative whose main focus resides in benefits and insurance policies as well as ensuring that they are properly updated and handled in accordance with today’s laws and policy options.

If you are having difficulty with an insurance payout, find a legal expert to fight for benefits that have remained unpaid before it’s too late. Find a lawyer who can help you understand all of the potential benefits and aspects of an insurance policy.

Check with your insurance agent to make sure that your beneficiaries are up to date. Your agent can also provide you with the advice that you need to get a policy that works best for you. Ensuring your beneficiary is well taken care of in the event of an accident or death. With proper insurance it’s possible to continue in the wake of an accident or family death.

If you feel as though you are entitled to insurance payouts be sure to contact an attorney immediately.

What is a Life Insurance Actuary?

An actuary is a person that was specifically trained to use mathematical principals, probability and statistical methods in order to assess the level of risk that a person or business poses. In order to obtain a degree, many Universities have made it possible to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree in actuarial science, but the field requires intense work both in and out of the University.

When relating to life insurance, this term takes many different things into consideration such as the health of the person being insured by an insurance company, the age of the person, the past history with any types of diseases, injuries or other potentially threatening health issues and many other influential factors that could possibly pose a risk to the insurance company. By applying mathematical principals and statistics to this real world problem, the life insurance actuary is then able to show the insurance company the risk that they would be taking by taking the client on. From here, the life insurance company can either turn the individual away who is applying for the life insurance, or choose to set the rate of life insurance for the individual who has applied. For the life insurance company, this can make it clear exactly who the individuals are who pose a higher risk for costing the life insurance company money once the person has already been taken on under the life insurance policy.

Through rigorous training and schooling, actuaries acquire any type of information that may be necessary in order to completely and successfully express the exact risk that an individual may pose for a company. Through years of experience, actuaries help numerous companies to avoid losing large amounts of money that would otherwise allow the clients who end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the company to have a life insurance policy. For an actuary, this line of work is not only an incredibly satisfying job, but is a passion.

How Much Is That Accidental Death Insurance Policy in the Window?

Wow, that accidental death insurance policy that you have been presented with by your bank sure looks shiny and like a good deal. A good deal that may be too good to be true perhaps. As it turns out, although you may pay very little for the policy, it still may be too much. That accidental death policy in the window may be worthless if you can’t get it to pay out when the time comes.

There are numerous court cases involving life insurance companies being sued by families for death benefits on accidental policies. Most people don’t think to sue if a payout on a policy is denied so insurance companies will often drag the case out as long as they can until a beneficiary becomes exasperated (or better yet, the statue of limitations expires). Even if a beneficiary does sue, ERISA laws are very favorable toward insurers. While a court case is pending, the insurer can keep the insurance proceeds until a final decision is rendered. Thus, is there really any incentive to pay on claims when a claim is first submitted? The worst case scenario for an insurer would be that they have to pay out if a judge rules in a beneficiaries favor.

The most common tactic made by insurance companies is the good ‘ole “that incident is not an accident” stance. In addition, insurers have been known to use a myriad of excuses to avoid payout. For instance, they might claim that a car accident was the result of a seizure or that a person actually intentionally had an auto accident in order to commit suicide. The insurer may even make this determination against what is shown on a death certificate. As a result, although a person may sue, a judge will side with the insurance company. There are some judges who can see through the fog though. According to one judge, benefits should be paid when a death is “an unintentional, unexpected, unusual and unforeseen event — an accident,”

Please do your homework before purchasing the accidental death policy in the window because for insurance companies like MetLife, AIG, Prudential and Hartford and others, the name of the game with accidental policies might be to avoid paying a death benefit. So the bottom line is if you feel the need to have an accidental death policy, be prepared to sue and try to recover from the insurance company. Hopefully you will get a judge who knows the definition of an accident.
